Deck Fastener Calculator

How many screws does a deck actually take? Enter your deck's square footage, your fastening rate, and the box size you're buying — the calculator gives you the total fastener count, boxes to purchase, and what it adds to the job cost. Works for face screws and hidden clip systems.

How the math works

  1. 01Total fasteners = deck area in square feet × fasteners per square foot.
  2. 02The rate depends on your layout: about 2.4 per sq ft for 5.5in boards face-screwed twice at every 16in O.C. joist crossing.
  3. 03Boxes = total fasteners ÷ fasteners per box, rounded up — always round up so you don't come up short mid-job.
  4. 04Cost = boxes × price per box. On a 240 sq ft deck, fasteners often run $80–$120, so they belong on the quote as their own line.

Common questions

How many screws do I need for a 200 square foot deck?

About 480 face screws at the standard 2.4 per square foot rate (5.5in boards, 16in O.C. framing, two screws per joist crossing). That's two 350-count boxes. Enter your exact area above for your number.

How do I figure the fastener rate for my layout?

Multiply your joist crossings per board row by boards per square foot. A 5.5in board covers about 0.458 sq ft per linear foot; at 16in O.C. you hit a joist every 1.33ft, so two screws per crossing works out to roughly 2.4 screws per sq ft. Tighter 12in O.C. framing pushes it to about 3.2.

Does this work for hidden fastener clips?

Yes. Hidden clip systems like grooved-board clips install one clip per joist crossing — about 1.75 to 2 clips per square foot. Enter the clip rate as fasteners per square foot and the bucket count as fasteners per box.

Should I add extra for stairs and picture framing?

Yes — stairs, borders, and breaker boards roughly double the fastening rate on those sections. Bump the rate or run a second calculation for the bordered area and add the two totals.
