How the math works
- 01Sections = total railing length ÷ section length, rounded up.
- 02Posts = total railing length ÷ post spacing, plus one for the end post.
- 03Cost = sections × price per section.
Common questions
How far apart can deck railing posts be?
Most codes cap post spacing at 6ft for a 36in guard. Check your local amendments — some jurisdictions require 4ft on stairs or elevated decks.
Do corners need extra posts?
Yes. Each direction change needs its own post, so add one per corner on top of the calculated count.
