Whole-project takeoff
Deck Board Calculator & Decking Calculator
Enter your deck dimensions once and get the full deck material list — footings, framing, decking boards, fasteners, railing and stairs — with the math behind every quantity so it can go straight into a quote.
Deck area: 240 sq ft · Railing: 44 ft
Material only — add your labor rate and markup. Unit prices are typical regional averages; adjust them to your supplier pricing inside Deckworks.
How the deck material math works
- 1. Deck area = length × width. That area drives decking boards and fastener counts.
- 2. Decking boards = area ÷ board coverage, plus your waste factor, divided by board length.
- 3. Joists = (run × 12) ÷ on-center spacing, plus one, plus your rim and band joists.
- 4. Footings = π × radius² × depth per hole × number of holes, converted to 60 or 80 lb bags.
- 5. Railing = exposed perimeter ÷ section length, with a post every 6 feet.
- 6. Stairs = total rise ÷ target riser, rounded, then tread boards per step.
Deck material questions
What materials should a deck board calculator or decking calculator cover?
A complete deck takeoff has six material groups: concrete footings, framing lumber (joists, rim and band), decking boards, fasteners, railing sections and posts, and stair stringers and treads. Missing any one of them is the usual reason a quote comes in under cost.
How much waste should I build into a deck material list?
10% is a safe default on a rectangular deck with square cuts. Move to 15% when you are running diagonal boards, picture-frame borders, or a lot of short runs where offcuts are unusable.
Does this calculator include labor?
No — these numbers are material only, so you can add your own labor rate and markup on top. Keeping material and labor separate is what lets you show a homeowner exactly where the material dollars go.
Can I put these numbers straight into a quote?
Yes. Every line below shows the math it came from, so you can paste the quantity, unit price and the calculation note directly into an estimate or invoice.
